Every year, some citizens ask us if they can use a trailer on their property.

In the Municipality of the Township of Stanstead, the use of camping equipment is authorized only in a campground.

All too often, such equipment :

  • Fail to properly manage the discharge of grey water and wastewater into the environment, or add an unplanned load to existing installations;
  • Increase pressure on waste management (garbage, recycling, composting);
  • Add an additional load to the use of our waterways (swimming, motorized and non-motorized watercraft, etc.);
  • Increase noise pollution in quiet areas;
  • Generate a fiscal imbalance by allowing temporary occupants to reside on the territory without contributing to the charges we levy on all property owners.

The temporary storage of such equipment may be authorized in a side or rear yard, only on land occupied with a main building. This assumes that the equipment and accessories are totally enclosed and not used in any way. A worksite trailer, connected to a water purification system, may nevertheless be used during major work on a property.

During the summer of 2024, the inspection team will be paying closer attention to the presence of this equipment. We don’t encourage whistle-blowing, but if you are affected by this type of situation near you, please contact us – confidentiality is a must:  https://www.cantonstanstead.ca/formulaire-de-plainte/
