The holiday season is fast approaching, which means that trees, garlands, lights are part of the decor, whether inside or outside your home. In order for you to spend quality time safely with your loved ones, here are some fire prevention tips for this festive period.

Prevention with Christmas trees :

  • It only takes 30 seconds for a tree to catch fire. It is therefore very important to take the following precautions to prevent such a situation from happening:
  • If you are thinking of using a natural tree, it is preferable to choose a freshly cut tree. The needles are green and do not come off easily;
  • Opt for an artificial tree;
  • Cut the trunk at an angle, even for a tree that you bought cut.

The new cut will help the tree to absorb moisture;

  • Place the tree in a water container that is always full;
  • Install the tree at least one meter away from any heat source;
  • Never decorate the tree with candles;
  • Always turn off the lights when you leave your home;

 The holiday season is fast approaching, which means prevention with decorations :

  • Use CSA or ULC approved lights;
  • Make sure they are in good condition;
  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions when installing Christmas lights;
  • Do not use decorations designed for indoor use outdoors;
  • Use approved extension cords;
  • Do not place extension cords in a high traffic area. Instead, install the tree and other electrical decorations near an electrical outlet; this way, the extension cord will no longer be necessary;
  • Do not hide extension cords under a carpet or rug;
  • Do not run an extension cord through a doorway. The cord insulation could be damaged if the door closes over it.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets and extension cords. Use a power bar instead.
  • Use only one extension cord at a time. Do not connect extension cords end to end.

More Tips :

  • Always keep exits clear, both indoors and outdoors;
  • Identify exits when going to family, friends or reception areas. The one you used to enter the building may not be usable in an emergency;
  • Make sure smoke alarms are functional. A smoke alarm is the fastest and most effective way to detect a fire and can save your life and the lives of your loved ones;

Make sure you know the location of portable fire extinguishers and make sure they are functional at all times. However, if a fire does break out, never take chances, call the fire department immediately.

Best wishes for a safe, happy and joyous Christmas.  A message from your Fire Department.                                                                Email  prevention@regieincendieest.com    INFO  http://www.regieincendieest.ca/
